We know that starting school and moving between year groups are important milestones for children and families. At Ackworth Howard, we want every child to feel happy, safe, valued and ready to flourish.

We believe strong transition is about far more than visits and routines. It is about building positive relationships, developing confidence and helping children feel ready for school and ready to learn.

We work closely with families, nurseries and other settings to ensure children experience a smooth and supportive transition into school. Through visits, shared information, communication with parents and carefully planned transition opportunities, we help children settle confidently into their new environment.

We also recognise the importance of communication, language, independence and emotional development in helping children become ready for school and ready to learn.

As children move through school, transition between classes and key stages is carefully planned so that pupils continue to feel supported, confident and successful in their learning journey. Where needed, additional transition support and opportunities are carefully tailored to meet individual needs and help all children feel secure and ready for change.

Preparing children for secondary school is also a key priority. We maintain strong links with local secondary schools and provide a range of transition opportunities throughout Upper Key Stage 2 to help pupils feel confident and prepared for the next stage of education.

Starting Reception

Starting Reception is a significant milestone for both children and families. We work closely with parents and early years providers to help every child make a positive start to school life.

You can find further information and guidance for families about school readiness through the Starting Reception document.
