The cane was back at the Howard School – but thankfully only briefly as we all enjoyed a journey through time, celebrating the rich history of our school during our annual Heritage Day.

The children enjoyed learning facts about how the Howard School came to be and were fascinated to learn about how it has changed over its 189 years.

Activities across the school included creating timelines showing chronological events through the school's history, learning about Victorian school life, creating school logos based on significant events through the school's history, writing a letter to King Charles about the school taking inspiration from a letter to the Queen in our archives and creating art work.

Parents also had access to the school archives during the coffee morning and it was wonderful to see some of them finding old photos of themselves attending the Howard School and hearing some new stories!

At the end of the day we had a wonderful celebration worship where each class shared samples of the work they had completed and upholding tradition we sung happy birthday to the school and presented the birthday cake – yum!

Work produced today will be collated and displayed in school.

Newspaper article from exactly 40 years ago… Said headmistress Miss K. Hardy: “We celebrate the birthday every year. I think it is remarkable that the school has been open so long when you consider the age of most schools.”

It is still one of the most important days on our school calendar each year!
